Torture optional?

Stuart Taylor Jr. discusses the legality of torturing terrorists.
This seems an "ends justify the means" situation, one on which principles and values can be thrown overboard just because brute force and intimidation might yield answers - not better ones, but that isn't what is discussed here.

I hope that the Iraqis don't just throw universally established conventions out the window if (God forbid!) they capture any of our troops. I am not anti-war, but there are many questionable things the current administration has done.

ABM treaty? Who needs it?

Rights? We're only curtailing them a little...

Biological weapons convention? We don't want inspectors on our soil.
