Student debts
But of course, Bush can not get identify with this, since his own experience is that of a little spoiled brat with all the money and the connections. Why should he worry about student debts??
Eliminating the debt racket wouldn't be difficult. Calling off the invasion of Iraq, for instance, would save an estimated $200 billion---that's six years of fiscally emancipated youth right there. Eliminating last year's $1.5 trillion tax cut--money that would have gone to rich people who won't miss it--would pay off everyone's student loans for the next 50 years.
And I am posting this as I prepare to submit paperwork for an MBA.
Some may argue that in the fiercely competitive society of the USA, the debts act as a barrier to increase the standards of the people that accede to higher education, therefore making it a much more valued resource.
Bullshit.
In this society, where wealth is so highly concentrated, and low income families lack medicine, basic education and a voice to complain, the sophistry of the competitive advantageous landscape of higher education is a fantasy that only perpetuates the class differences, diminishes mobility, and lowers the income per capita of the country as a whole, while at the same time reducing its ability to compete in the international markets.
And then we go for an absolutely stupid war.
On second hand, the war will increase employment, as more and more Americans become casualties, either dead or rendered completely incapable thanks to the cocktail of medicines the US Army is going to give them, ie, Desert Storm veterans.
I didn’t vote for Bush.

Interesting topic, Camilo. I'm learning the hard way that student loans are not really worth the tradeoff. "Pure" education doesn't get you a job, but it does cost a lot of money. Learning a "skill" (for example, nursing, engineering, or teaching) does get you a job, but you're never going to get rich. Starting out your gown-up life in debt is pretty depressing. Personally, my student loans are my second-highest monthly bills (after housing), ringing in at about $450/month. And no, I'm not earning enough money to pay more than my minimum payment each month.
