No more pain

The New Scientist reports that the different way people perceive pain is based on their genetic makeup:

People with a particularly active form of COMT were hardier, whereas people with a lazier form felt pain more acutely. Those with both forms of the gene, one from each parent, experienced intermediate pain, the researchers found.

If people were able to block the intense response to pain on demand, ie when going to the dentist, much more extreme sports would be available. Until the effects faded, that is.
This surely has the Army and sports recruiters salivating.
Me? I can withstand pain. Once, when skydiving, I landed really bad, almost separating my right fibula and tibia. Anyway, I picked up the canopy, and walked the 800 yards to the hangar. The following day went to emergency, alone, and came back in a cast.
Not a tear, baby :)

Of course, to compensate, I cry when I get nostalgic, or remember loved ones. But then I eat chocolate ice cream, and everything is allright again.

Yeah, I thought I could withstand pain too, broke my ribs, thought they were bruised, 2 weeks later, when I realized something weird was up because they weren't getting better, went to the doctor, who was refusing xrays saying if they were broken, I would have been in a long time ago. I said, just xray them thank you, sure enough, a broken rib. When I crushed the bone in my hand it was much more obvious...I had a purple bulb with stubby fingers on my right arm where my hand should have been...still, no real pain. Now, of all things, I got in a car accident and am having the most terrible pain I have ever felt *aside from child birth of course...between my shoulder blades and up my neck. They say I have fibromyalgia...HA...it is proven that fibro people have low pain tolerence...I just smashed my hand in the pick up truck door, at the knuckles I might add....pain, none, unless I am trying to dig in the pockets of some too tight jeans...but I won't get into that...really, what is going on here...and if it is that I can handle bone trauma, but not soft tissue pain, then why is it when I over extended my knee, very over extended, I didn't cry, I laughed *rolled on the floor litteraly, since I couldn't stand and puked and fainted, woke up rolled over to the phone, was taken to the doctor, no pain, refused pain killers, and just braced it # there was one position that I didn't like too well. So! What is going on!!!! I now take pain killers daily... the only thing they are good at killing is your stomache...I take that back, I would be a completely useless ball of mush without them...what has happened to me...do you know? Because I dont.
